The Black Film and Video Network
The Black Film and Video Network (BFVN), founded in Toronto, Ontario, is a pioneering organization dedicated to supporting and advancing Black talent in Canada’s screen industries. What began over a decade ago as a small resource group for writers, directors, and producers has now grown into an international membership of nearly 300 film professionals.
BFVN is more than a networking hub—it’s a community that uplifts Black voices in film, television, and digital media, while also creating bridges to opportunity in a highly competitive industry.
The Network brings together a wide range of creative and technical professionals, including:
Writers and Directors shaping narratives that highlight Black perspectives.
Performers and Stunt Performers bringing powerful stories to life on screen.
Hair and Makeup Artists ensuring authentic, polished representation for productions.
Camera Operators and Crew providing technical expertise across film and television sets.
Students and Emerging Filmmakers seeking mentorship and career development opportunities.
This interdisciplinary structure ensures that filmmakers can find both above-the-line and below-the-line talent, making BFVN an invaluable resource for producers and studios committed to diverse hiring.
BFVN supports its members through a robust slate of programs and initiatives designed to empower filmmakers at every stage of their careers. These include:
Screenings and Showcases: Highlighting the creative work of Black filmmakers in Toronto and internationally.
Monthly Members Meetings: A collaborative space to share knowledge, resources, and opportunities.
Annual Members Directory: A comprehensive listing that helps production companies and hiring managers connect with Black talent.
Awards and Recognition: Celebrating outstanding achievements in film, television, and digital storytelling.
Industry Newsletter: Keeping members informed about funding opportunities, workshops, and industry news.
For filmmakers and production teams, BFVN offers direct access to skilled, experienced, and diverse professionals who bring unique perspectives and talents to film projects. For members, the network provides visibility, professional growth, and a supportive community.
As Canada’s screen industry continues to expand, BFVN plays a critical role in ensuring that Black creators have equal opportunities to tell their stories and that production companies can easily find and collaborate with Black talent in Toronto and beyond.
