Pioneering Pyrotechnic Bullet Hit Effects in Vancouver

Based in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Direct Hit FX is at the forefront of practical special effects, specializing in pyrotechnic bullet hit solutions for film and television productions. Their signature innovation, the Rapid Reload squib kit, has transformed the industry by offering a standardized, efficient, and safe alternative to traditional hand-crafted bullet hit devices.

Traditional squib setups often require extensive preparation time and can yield inconsistent results. Recognizing these challenges, Direct Hit FX developed the Rapid Reload system to address the need for quick assembly and reliable performance. This patented technology allows for setup and activation in just 2–4 minutes, significantly reducing downtime on set and enabling multiple takes without compromising on realism or safety.

The Rapid Reload system is available in two configurations:

LFH (Low Force Hit): Designed for subtle effects, ideal for television productions requiring less dramatic blood splatter. It utilizes an 8cc blood bag, customizable up to 10cc, and is compatible with industry-standard De La Mare D80-1/2 pyrotechnic charges.

BFH (Big Force Hit): Suited for high-impact scenes demanding more pronounced visual effects. This setup features a 28cc blood bag, customizable between 15–35cc, and works with De La Mare D80-1 charges.

Both configurations come complete with harnesses, 18-gauge steel protection, clear body mount tapes, and customizable blood options, including unique choices like "Zombie" blood. The compact design, with a total profile of just 2.5 inches, ensures the device remains discreet on camera while delivering a visceral impact.

Beyond the squib kits, Direct Hit FX offers the Stealth Tube, a camera-friendly SPFX smoke tubing solution that blends seamlessly into shots. Available in custom sizes, patterns, and colors, it provides filmmakers with versatile options for enhancing atmospheric effects.

The company's commitment to innovation and excellence has been recognized industry-wide. In 2016, Direct Hit FX received the New Technology Award at the Cine Gear Expo in Los Angeles for their Rapid Reload systems, highlighting their contribution to advancing special effects technology.

Founded by Martin Testa, a seasoned SPFX technician, Direct Hit FX emerged from a desire to streamline on-set operations and deliver consistent, high-quality effects. Their products have been featured in various productions, including appearances on CBC's Dragons' Den, showcasing their impact on the Canadian film industry.

For filmmakers seeking reliable, efficient, and safe pyrotechnic bullet hit effects, Direct Hit FX stands as a trusted partner. Their dedication to innovation ensures that productions can achieve the desired visual impact without unnecessary delays or safety concerns.
